When dead tired, multi-task

Because maybe then you'll be so busy you'll forget "I've been up since 4 a.m." Well minus a half-hour. That and a 16oz soda to start the day. Ok I'll rewind a bit. Point of my title will have to wait.

Yesterday we had "superfuss" in stereo. Both of them (do they non-vocally set stuff up like this?) decided they didn't need to take a nap. So overly tired and cranky were pretty much the routine all day. We tried the swings, playmat, bouncy seats, a car ride, you name it. If we were actively entertaining them, they were calm for awhile but never lasted very long. Now they didn't fuss in the car but really never fell asleep so we'll call the car ride 1/2 successful. At least it was quiet. Finally took a nap at 6:30, woke up for an 8:30 bottle and both were asleep by the end of the feeding.

Awww....so cute when it's not 4am

Now you're thinking that's not too bad. Pretty fussy babies until 6:30 and then smooth sailing. Ah but the little peanuts more to their plan. I was worried a little with them taking a late nap they may not sleep until 7 or so like they have, and don't I just hate when I'm right. In this case, yes. 4 am, Allie is awake and hungry, and as on cue, her sister follows shortly. So both the hubby and I rock them (stall them in theory) and while they quieted down after 20 minutes or so, they didn't fall back into a good sleep until 5:20.

Back to sleep we go, and I have a dream where I wake up to the monitor, get up to put the bottles in warm water, and go check on the girls. Then in reality, at 6:30 I did wake up and got the bottles ready and went in to the girls. Hmmm......that's sad. I was just about to post yesterday about a really messed up dream I had and where did my brain come up with such material, and this morning we have that. Reminiscent of a Calvin and Hobbes sketch.

Of course after the 6:30 bottle we had chipper little peanuts.
Audrey in her attempt to scoot off the playmat. (No smile, concentrating on her task at hand)
Allie pleading her case "I didn't mean to be up at 4am, aren't I cute though?"
So now with hubby and I both up, we, in a sleepy whirlwind of entertaining the girls and getting to work, managed to vacuum the whole first floor, swiffer-mop the wood floors, do the girls' laundry, take out the trash, do the dishes, and windex the countertops. Not too bad for a couple hours of work.

I shouldn't complain. Yes I don't sleep and get frustrated when they fuss, but all things equal, they're healthy, we're getting by, and "hopefully" soon it'll get easier bit by bit. We just about have them sleeping through the night which is a huge step. Hopefully soon they'll start grabbing stuff and find life in general a bit more entertaining.

Random switch - Seems I have little control over the wildlife too. In taking out said trash, I find a visitor chomping on some weeds/grass in our side yard. He, unlike most bunnies, wasn't too worried about me, but at least stopped his munching.
Hops off a few feet and turns around as if to say "silly human, why are you still there? Go back inside so I can go back to my breakfast."
Nice........... I'd actually care about him eating up my yard but we're already dealing with the Japanese beatles so I'll deal with one yard-destroyer at a time. Then again, since the grass needs to be cut, maybe the rabbit was just helping us out.

  1. So sorry the girls were so fussy. We had a good day with Addison, she slept all day except for a few awake hours and to eat. Riley on the other hand was fussy all freaking day long. So then they took turns at night. Riley slept all night but Addison fussed all night. We really can't win, can we?

  2. We used to do anything to get E to quiet down. That kid had a set of lungs and never wanted to stop crying. We had to turn the bouncer on, and rock him with our foot sometimes for hours. Other times we drove around until he fell asleep and left him in the seat. The boy would NOT nap. There were days that all I wanted to do was poke my eyes out with exhaustion.

Do the girls take a paci? Have you tried giving them when they wake up at 4:30?

  3. Sorry it was a rough night. I hate those! I found that even though I'm not a schedule person, Micah needed to nap regularly throughout the day. I decided to give the Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child Method a try. When he was fewer than 8 weeks old, I could count on him to nap as needed, but as he got older, he got stubborn. So, every 90 minutes - 2 hours, I put him down for a nap. Even if all he did was sleep for 10 minutes, and then I'd start the clock ticking all over again. I did that all day long until "bed time" and then he slept through the night. I found the more he napped, the better he slept. We are now on 2-3 naps a day, but that is pretty recent. He was napping on and off all day for a LONG time. I'd say the past 2 months he consolidated to a more 3x/day nap schedule. Most days, he still likes 3 naps, and we are starting to get more set times. Anyway, I noticed that after putting him down at regular intervals for a week, he started to get sleepy cues. Then, I was slowly able to follow his cues instead of the clock. Good luck - I hope it gets easier for you soon. There are regressions that happen along the way - we would have a month or two of him sleeping until 8, and then he'd go back to waking up at 5. He was sleeping until 8:45 for a while, but lately he is waking up at 7 again.

I second the pacifier recommendation - that was usually all it took to send Micah back to sleep (unless he was hungry).

    Cute bunny!
