(Oddball) pet peeves and quick comebacks

Not sure if those topics are related, hah.

Hubby goes crazy (like once we had to stop the car and figure it out) if something is rattling in the car. Yesterday there were two batteries in the side pocket making a slight noise and he just couldn't stand it. Has taken the car in a few times to get little rattles and squeaks figured out. One turned out to be a visor snap not 100% functioning. Cracks me up.

I have a few that mostly concern driving.
1 - blinkers exist for a purpose - use them! A car honked at me for stepping out in a crosswalk at a 4 way stop earlier. They did not have a blinker on and I was going in the same direction as them, so I was a bit surprised when they started to turn left into my path. Hmmmm now if you'd put on your left blinker, I wouldn't have started walking.

2 - same with lights. In Missouri, it's a (not very enforced) law that if the weather conditions mean turning on your wipers, your lights should be on. I can't tell you how many cars during daytime rain or storms do not.

3 - texting or cell phone usage - don't even get me started. If you want to argue, read car and driver's recent study on said issue. Very disturbing results.

One of my friends calls me finicky. Hmmm maybe. Ok after visiting the cell phone store, yeah probably. But WTH? When did flip-phones go the way of the dinosaurs? All the store had was either touch-screen or slide phones. I don't know why but I hate slides. I just want a nice replacement for my little flip-phone that decided to die over the weekend. Sigh, seems I will have to go without. Could get a touch screen but hubby has an IPhone and the text message keyboard drives me crazy. Yeah yeah, back to being finicky. It's just a dumb cell phone.

A blog I read the other day brought up a question on how to respond to certain comments and got me thinking.
I'm debating whether to let out my sarcastic side or stay in the "nod and smile" frame of mind. We found out upon leaving the hospital that twins tend to attract attention. I don't mind this (don't touch my kids preferably) but when someone asks "oh are they twins?", ugh, I go nuts inside. Funny part though, if they state "oh twins," that's fine. Somehow the interrogative statement annoys me. "No they're not, I just perfected cloning at home." Too harsh? Ok maybe they could be cousins or just a friend's baby and mine. Hmm besides the fact that they look pretty much identical. Even worse is when we get asked if they're boys or girls as I stare at my girls in their pink carseats dressed in pink/purple outfits. So far I have nothing for a comeback on that one.

So pet peeves or creative twin retorts?

  1. Please answer that you perfected cloning. I think I would die of laughter.

  2. I love snappy comebacks! Or I like to be honest and blunt and make the other uncomfortable. The other day I was asked if Nae's dad was tall. I looked behind me and said "yeah, Husband's pretty tall" and she said "oh your kids have the same dad?!" "Uhhhh yes :-|" I was too surprised by the conversation that I didn't have a snappy comeback, but normally I'd say something like "well SHE thinks that's her dad, we're just not sure, it might be his brother" lol

  3. Oh Julie, we are stuck with that twin thing for a while. I get the same thing and you just want to smack people upside the head don't you? Oh and I get the are they girls or boys thing also. We bought pink carseats for a reason and the girls are usually rocking their girly colors. I just think people don't know how to start a conversation so they resort to being dumb!

  4. I guess things never change. I had the same problem when my daughter was a baby 36 years ago. she would be dressed in a little dress, ribbons, lace, etc. and someone would say.......oh he is so cute!! I know she didn't have a ton of hair but come on people!! lol

  5. Gotta love how people totally get the wrong idea from kids. My son can be dressed all in "boy" stuff, in the middle of doing stereo-typed "boy" things, and people still see long hair=girl. No, folks, long hair=hippie. Although I have been known to dress him like a girl on the rare occasion just because I think he should be comfortable with his feminine side. And because I would have really liked to dress a girl. :-)

  7. Maybe you could say - no, the one on the left is mine, but I still can't figure out where the other one came from - do you know if anyone is missing a child?

Or you could go with the "it was a 2 for 1 special, and I can't figure out how to return the 2nd one." Or you could say "two? where do you see two babies? I've only got one baby in there - is your vision okay? are you feeling well?"

So many options!! I'd make a list and use different ones.

I get annoyed by everyone thinking Micah is a girl. I mean, I get it that most people see the long crazy hair and think girl, but hello, do you see bows? What about the blue and green and trucks on his outfits? I mean, come on people, use your powers of deduction!

  8. I'm so with you on all of these issues! Everyone gets annoyed with me when I hang up after figuring out they're driving. I just can't be responsible for helping to cause an accident!

  9. And it will not get better with the comments. Get asked and stopped every single time we are out. It truly gets under my skin because then they have to say, "Wow, they just don't look the same size." Thank you for the reminder that my son is small.

  11. Found these on another website:

    1. Stranger: "Did you have them vaginally or c-section?"
Me: "How was your last Pap smear?"

    2. Stranger: "Well what do we have here?"
    Me: "Babies."

    3. Stranger: "How much did they weigh when they were born?"
    Me: "Enough."

    4. Stranger: "Do twins run in your family?"
Me: "Only when they're in trouble."

    5. Stranger: "Were you trying for twins?"(What are people thinking?!?!)
Me: "No, we actually wanted quads."

    6. Stranger: "Did you use any drugs?"
    Me: "I do now."

    7. Stranger: "Are they twins?"
Me: "Nope. We adopted one from China."
